We have turned the corner to the start of a new year and the start of a new decade. While we may look back to learn from our past as well as reminisce about the good old days, we may recognize that many of us are truly are in a different world of business today. As we plant ourselves firmly in this environment, we need to arm ourselves with our tried and true business principles and ideals, our energy and vigor, and the toolsets of technology to compete in this world that we have in front of us today.

Windows 7

Windows 7, which was released in October, has hit the ground running and is destined to be "the #1 desktop in business and on the home front" over the next 5 years. In so many ways, Windows 7 is turning out to be "What Microsoft Vista should have been".

In most cases, a PC that is currently running Windows XP cannot be easily upgraded to Windows 7. In addition, the hardware requirements of Windows 7 may make for trying to use your current hardware with Windows 7 an impossibility.

Consider Windows 7 for all future hardware purchases. That being said, you will want to do your homework to make sure the applications you run (and the versions you have) will run Windows 7 properly. Older printers and scanners, likewise, may need to be replaced as many vendors are not writing compatible drivers for older equipment. Odds and Ends

	Wireless devices like routers and network cards now have a new standard to live by. 802.11n, is now officially a standard. Devices have been previously sold with 802.11n in place, before it was a standard. However, 802.11n is now official. This means that all future purchases of wireless Wi-Fi routers should be based on 802.11n which is compatible with 802.11g clients. With the stability of 802.11n, some folks in the industry see it as a method to start to replace the "hard" cable that is running through offices everywhere.
	Microsoft’s latest Office offering, Office 2010, will be available in the first half of the year in 2010. Who would have thought?. Hear more about it at http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/default.aspx.
	Document Management can be integrated into your systems. Documents that can be associated with a given customer, for instance, can be accessed through your system, whether the document is a Word Document or an E-mail. 	What cell phone should you upgrade to? Messaging using a cell phone is key today for many users. For those users who want access to corporate email from an Exchange Server, choosing a Smartphone that supports this is critical. Apple’s iPhone does this well, as does the new Motorola Droid.  All phones based on the Windows Mobile Operating system also work "out of the box". Blackberry can offer this integration with the addition of B.E.S. software on the server.
	Antivirus protection has been changing. What was once a small piece of software installed on a desktop to monitor Virus activity has turned into large, consuming processes looking for everything – from Spyware to Spam. There has been a price for this in terms of performance. Many users are rethinking this. For the home front, Microsoft Security Essentials has been a top performer given the smaller footprint. In the office,  Trend’s Antivirus offerings have bloated, making way for other products like Kaspersky Anti-Virus to gain popularity.

	Many businesses have been scrambling to try to keep email running effectively with Microsoft Exchange and other Email products. Mailbox sizes and backup are certainly challenges. Google is in the enterprise/small business segment now offering a replacement to Exchange – Google Apps.
